Patella Pain
Patella pain, often referred to as patellofemoral pain syndrome or runner’s knee, is a common condition causing pain at the front of the knee around or behind the kneecap. At Physioform Cammeray, we provide targeted assessment and rehabilitation to address the root cause and help you return to full activity.
About This Condition
The patella (kneecap) sits within a groove at the front of the knee and glides through this groove as the knee bends and straightens. When the patella does not track smoothly, or when the surrounding structures are overloaded, pain can develop. This condition is particularly common in runners, cyclists and those who perform a high volume of squatting or stair climbing.
Common Causes
- Muscle imbalances affecting patellar tracking
- Sudden increases in training load
- Running or jumping on hard surfaces
- Hip and gluteal weakness altering lower limb alignment
- Tight hip flexors, iliotibial band or quadriceps
- Flat feet or altered foot mechanics
Common Symptoms
- Aching pain at the front of the knee, behind or around the kneecap
- Pain that worsens with running, cycling, squatting or climbing stairs
- Pain after prolonged sitting with the knee bent
- A grinding or creaking sensation under the kneecap
- Increased pain when walking downhill or downstairs
