Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, affecting people who are on their feet for long periods or who participate in running and other weight-bearing activities. At Physioform Cammeray, we provide evidence-based treatment to reduce your pain and address the underlying factors driving the condition.
About This Condition
The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the sole of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. When this tissue is overloaded or placed under excessive tension, it can become irritated and painful. The pain is often described as a sharp stabbing sensation that is worst with the first steps in the morning or after periods of rest.
Common Causes
  • Sudden increases in walking or running load
  • Prolonged standing on hard surfaces
  • Tight calf muscles and Achilles tendon
  • Reduced ankle dorsiflexion mobility
  • Flat feet or high arches
  • Wearing unsupportive footwear
  • Carrying excess body weight
Common Symptoms
  • Sharp pain under the heel, particularly with the first steps in the morning
  • Tenderness to pressure under the heel bone
  • Aching along the sole of the foot after prolonged activity
  • Stiffness in the foot and ankle, particularly first thing in the morning
