Rotator Cuff Tear

Rotator cuff tears are a common source of shoulder pain and weakness, affecting people who perform overhead activities, those who have sustained a shoulder injury and older adults in whom the tendons may have degenerated over time. At Physioform Cammeray, we provide thorough assessment and structured rehabilitation to help you regain shoulder strength and function.
About This Condition
The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles and their tendons that surround the shoulder joint, providing stability and controlling movement. Tears can range from small partial-thickness tears to complete full-thickness ruptures. Whilst surgery is sometimes required for large or complete tears, many rotator cuff tears respond well to physiotherapy alone.
Common Causes
  • Repetitive overhead activities in sport or work
  • Gradual degeneration of the tendon with age
  • Previous shoulder impingement or instability
  • Acute injury such as a fall onto an outstretched arm
  • Rotator cuff tendon pain related to menopause
  • Sudden increase in upper body training loads
Common Symptoms
  • Pain in the shoulder, often radiating into the upper arm
  • Weakness when lifting the arm or carrying objects
  • Difficulty reaching overhead or behind the back
  • Pain at night, particularly when lying on the affected shoulder
  • A feeling of the shoulder being unable to hold its position
  • Clicking or clunking during shoulder movement
