Swimmer’s Shoulder

Swimmer’s shoulder is an overuse injury affecting the shoulder complex that is particularly common in competitive and recreational swimmers. At Physioform Cammeray, we understand the demands that swimming places on the shoulder and provide targeted rehabilitation to address the underlying cause and get you back in the water.

About This Condition
Swimmer’s shoulder refers to a range of shoulder conditions that arise from the repetitive overhead motion of the swimming stroke. The condition most commonly involves irritation of the rotator cuff tendons or impingement of soft tissue within the shoulder. It is often related to training load, stroke mechanics or muscle imbalances.
Common Causes
  • High training volumes and sudden increases in yardage
  • Poor stroke technique, particularly in freestyle or butterfly
  • Rotator cuff muscle fatigue or weakness
  • Restricted thoracic mobility affecting shoulder mechanics
  • Shoulder instability or hypermobility
  • Excessive use of hand paddles or pull buoys
Common Symptoms
  • Pain in the front or side of the shoulder during or after swimming
  • Pain that worsens with increased training load
  • Weakness in the shoulder, particularly with internal or external rotation
  • A catching or clicking sensation during the stroke
  • Reduced shoulder range of motion
