Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a painful and fustrating condition affecting the outer side of the elbow that is common in people who perform repetitive gripping or wrist extension activities. Despite its name, tennis elbow affects many people who have never picked up a raquet. At Physioform Cammeray, we provide evidence-based treatment to address the underlying tendon pathology and support lasting recovery.

About This Condition

Tennis elbow involves degeneration and micro-tearing of the extensor tendons that attach to the lateral epicondyle (the bony prominence on the outer elbow). It is an overuse injury driven by repetitive loading of the forearm extensor muscles and can become a persistent, frustrating condition without appropriate management.

Common Causes
  • Repetitive wrist and forearm movements in work or sport
  • Manual occupations such as painting, carpentry or typing
  • Racket sports with poor technique or equipment fit
  • Sudden increases in activity involving gripping or lifting
  • Muscle weakness or tightness in the forearm
Common Symptoms
  • Pain and tenderness on the outer side of the elbow
  • Pain that may radiate down the forearm
  • Weakness with gripping, lifting or carrying
  • Discomfort when shaking hands or turning a door handle
  • Stiffness in the elbow first thing in the morning
  • Night Pain
